Night vision device PNW-57 A converted to a LiPo powerded device.

Today we will present you a simple guide to help you convert your night vision devices from Russian or other Eastern Bloc production to a battery operating device with standard airsoft batteries or normal batteries.

This present PNW-57 A night vision PNW-57 A night vision device is one of the first generation and intended for use in cars and tanks. Normally it would be powered by the 24 V car ports (cigarette lighter).

However, in order to bring the unit up to running,  9V are enough power. In our case, we use a 11.1 V LiPo battery. You can find them in Airsoft Guns or Model-Vehicles.

Please notice that these night vision devices are very light sensitive! Never use them in Daylight, otherwise the tubes inside the device will burn out.
Use this devices just in complete darkness or in a darkened room.

The conversion is actually very easy. The PNW-57 PNW-57 A is protected against reverse polarity and has a simple 2 pin connector that is normally plugged into the car extension cable.

Here it is now to find out what the + and which is the - pole is by trying with a charged battery with which polarity, the device is running.

IMPORTANT! The lens of the night vision device have to be covered  by the supplied protective caps otherwise the tubes will burn out when you start the devive in daylight. (This devices amplify weak light, the daylight would be just too much for the tubes).

Now we try just the two ways in which the poles might be occupied and paying attention to the sounds that came from the transformer (the box at the back of the tank hood)

If you hear no sound, then you have the wrong polarity. If a slight buzzin or crackin is heard, you have found the right one and the device works.

In the infrared headlights, it is much easier. Inside a simple light bulb so we don't have to care about the polarity.

Now that we know how to connect the device, we solder us a T-Connector (Dean) to the old plugs firmly and insulate everything well with shrink tubing. Once that is done, the unit is ready to use.

You can find the PNW57A night vision devices on Red Star Militaria
